Research Institute of Cultural Heritage & Tourism (RICHT)

By virtue of law, the Iranian Cultural Heritage Organization (ICHO) was established in 1985 as an organization affiliated with the then Ministry of Culture and Higher Education. In fact, a number of smaller bodies were merged to establish one united organization covering all duties and functions of those bodies:

1.     Iranian Center for  Archaeological Research (under the auspices of Ministry of Culture and Higher Education)

2.     General Office for Traditional Arts (under the auspices of Ministry of Culture and Higher Education)

3.     Center for Anthropological Museum (under the auspices of Ministry of Culture and Higher Education)

4.     Historical Properties Bureau (under the auspices of Ministry of Culture and Higher Education)

5.     Museum of Ancient Iran (under the auspices of Ministry of Culture and Higher Education)

6.     Provincial Office for Protection of Cultural Heritage (under the auspices of Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance)

7.     General Office for Museums (under the auspices of Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance)

8.     General Office for Historical Monuments (under the auspices of Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance)

9.     General Office in Charge of Palaces (under the auspices of Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance)

10.                        National Organization for Protection of Cultural Heritage (under the auspices of Ministry of Culture and Higher Education)

11.                         General Office for Historical Houses (Golestan Palace) (under the auspices of Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs)

ICHO was responsible for all issues regarding cultural heritage of Iran including identification, documentation, research, education, archaeological surveys and excavation, protection, conservation, restoration and publication of all instances of the Iranian cultural heritage.

Recently, ICHO was merged with two other important organizations: The National Handicrafts Organization and Tourism Organization. This dynamic organization is now called the Iranian Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO).

Due to the extensive and heavy responsibilities and duties of ICHHTO, the Organization decided to establish a specialized and academic research institute to conduct its expert and investigational duties in all aspects of cultural heritage and tourism. Accordingly, the Research Institute for Cultural Heritage and Tourism (RICHT) was established by virtue of the national law. RICHT is by nature an academic entity that is governed by the same laws that rule over other Iranian universities and research centers.

RICHT comprises the following five research centers, two independent specialized research groups, central library and archive publications:

·         Iranian Center for Archaeological Research (ICAR)

·         Anthropological Research Center (ARC)

·         Research Center for Conservation of Cultural Relics (RCCCR)

·         Research Center for Linguistics, Inscriptions and Texts (RCLIT)

·         Research Center for Conservation of Buildings & Fabrics (RCCBF)

·         `Independent Group of the Iranian Traditional (National) Arts (IGITR)

·         Independent Group of Tourism (IGT)
